WHAT WE DO

Design and Engineering

McKay provides comprehensive marine electrical design and engineering services for new vessel construction, refits, and electrical upgrades. Their experienced engineers collaborate closely with clients, shipyards, and naval architects to develop customized designs for electrical distribution, automation, control, and monitoring systems, ensuring full compliance with marine industry standards. Their capabilities include power system design, load analysis, power management, switchboard and generator integration, shore power systems, propulsion and thruster controls, and vessel-wide automation. With a focus on reliability, redundancy, and efficiency, McKay delivers tailored solutions that enhance vessel performance, safety, and operability across all marine sectors.

Vessel Electrification and Hybridization

McKay is a leader in the electrification and hybridization of marine vessels, with experience spanning vessels from 62 to 476 feet (19 m to 145 m). Their engineers specialize in integrating advanced electrical systems to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and meet modern emissions regulations. Services include optimizing power management systems, implementing battery storage and energy recovery solutions, and developing hybrid or fully electric propulsion systems. McKay also provides detailed system design, simulation, and performance analysis to ensure reliability, safety, and seamless integration with existing vessel systems. These solutions deliver cleaner, smarter, and more efficient marine power systems while reducing fuel consumption and carbon footprint.

Vessel Control, Alarm and Monitoring

VCAM is a McKay-developed system that integrates all electrical equipment, providing complete control and monitoring for vessels of any size. Designed around each client’s requirements, VCAM integrates seamlessly with onboard electrical systems and represents advanced digital control technology. It operates dual PLCs (port and starboard) to manage distributed remote I/O (RIO) across the vessel, with built-in redundancy for maximum reliability. The system automates major electrical functions, including shore power, generators, propulsion, ventilation, bilge pumps, winches, anchors, and more. It has been installed on motor yachts, sailing superyachts, ferries, and naval vessels worldwide. The user interface provides full system visibility and can be customized to run on any compatible display, offering a powerful and intuitive control experience.

Shore power and charging infrastructure

McKay has extensive experience in the design, supply, and installation of ship-to-shore (onshore) power facilities, marine charging units (up to 5 megawatts), transformer installations, and EV chargers for both commercial and residential applications. Most EV charging units fall within the 7kW to 22kW range.

Marine Switchboards

McKay designs and manufactures marine switchboards using the CUBIC panel system. This fully type-tested system meets standards from major certification bodies such as KEMA, ASTA, UL, DNV, and Lloyd’s. McKay produces fully automated main and emergency switchboards with integrated generator control, load control, shore power, and bow thruster systems. These switchboards range from Form 1 to Form 4 and can achieve protection ratings up to IP54, with load capacities up to 7000A. Their flexible product range allows customization to meet specific client requirements, including integration with third-party equipment.

Electrical Maintenance

McKay provides reliable marine electrical maintenance services, including both scheduled servicing and emergency repairs. They work with clients to develop customized asset management and maintenance programs that ensure systems operate safely and efficiently. Using thermal imaging, they identify potential faults early to prevent failures and reduce risk. As a certified Independent Qualified Person (IQP), they also test emergency lighting systems to meet building compliance requirements. Additionally, they perform testing and tagging of portable electrical equipment across marine, commercial, and industrial environments.

Communications Electronics

McKay has extensive experience installing and maintaining communication and electronic systems across a wide range of vessels. Their expertise includes HF, MF, VHF, UHF, and SSB radio systems, GMDSS, satellite communications (Inmarsat and Iridium), VSAT, PABX systems, and fleet broadband solutions. They also specialize in fiber optic backbones, structured cabling, and integrated communication networks, ensuring reliable connectivity and operational efficiency across all vessel types.

Navigational Electronics

McKay provides integration and maintenance of navigational electronics for both certified installations and operational systems. Their capabilities include radar systems, ECDIS, voyage data recorders, sonar and depth systems with 3D charting, environmental monitoring instruments, and fully integrated bridge systems. These solutions ensure safe, reliable, and compliant navigation across all vessel types.
